HalalWallet's guide to halal stocks explains AAOIFI Shariah screening criteria for equities — debt, revenue, and liquidity ratios — and compares top halal stock screening tools including Zoya, Musaffa, and Islamicly. Published by HalalWallet (halalwallet.ca).

Halal Stocks: Screening Criteria, Tools & How to Invest

Investing in individual stocks is permissible in Islam — as long as the companies pass both a business activity screen and a financial ratio screen. This guide explains the AAOIFI-aligned criteria that major screeners use, compares the top screening tools, and walks through how to start building a halal stock portfolio.

A stock is halal if the company's primary business is permissible and its financial ratios (debt, cash/interest-bearing securities, impermissible income) fall within AAOIFI limits. HalalWallet keeps 305 dated stock verdicts — search any ticker below or browse the live list of stocks that currently pass.

  • Two screens: business activity (what the company does) + financial ratios (how it's financed)
  • AAOIFI thresholds (what we use): <30% debt-to-market-cap, <30% cash, <5% impermissible income
  • Screening status can change quarterly as financial data updates
  • Purification required: donate the impermissible income portion of your dividends
  • You can use any standard brokerage — just avoid margin and interest-bearing accounts
  • Screening tools: Zoya, Musaffa, Islamicly provide instant halal/haram ratings

Every stock below links to a full verdict record — the business screen, the exact debt/cash/income ratios from the latest filing, and what each recognized screening authority says. Statuses change as companies file new financials, so each record carries its review date. This is the current corpus count, not a frozen list:

How Halal Stock Screening Works (AAOIFI Criteria)

Business Activity Screen

The company's primary business must not involve prohibited activities.

Generally Permissible

  • Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Manufacturing
  • Real estate (non-REIT)
  • Logistics & shipping

Prohibited Activities

  • Alcohol production/distribution
  • Conventional banking/insurance
  • Gambling/casinos
  • Adult entertainment
  • Tobacco
  • Weapons of mass destruction

Financial Ratio Screen

Even if the business is permissible, certain financial ratios must be within acceptable limits.

Debt-to-Market Cap: < 30%

Interest-bearing debt divided by market cap (AAOIFI standard; the Dow Jones, S&P, MSCI and FTSE standards use ~33%)

Cash & Interest-Bearing Securities: < 30%

Cash and interest-bearing investments divided by market cap (AAOIFI; other standards use ~33%)

Impermissible Income: < 5%

Revenue from prohibited sources (interest, haram activities) as a % of total revenue — 5% across all standards

How to use this comparison: HalalWallet is an independent educational comparison platform — by design, we do not provide financial, legal, or religious advice. We do the research homework so your final checks are quick and personal.

Product structures and Shariah oversight vary by provider, so finish with three built-in steps:

  • Confirm current terms and halal compliance directly with the provider — their quote is final.
  • Review the contract structure (Murabaha, Ijara, Musharakah, etc.) and any disclosed Shariah board opinions.
  • Bring your shortlist to a qualified Islamic finance advisor or scholar, so the conversation is about your situation, not the basics.
