Wealthsimple Trade is a self-directed brokerage. It is not the Wealthsimple Halal Investing portfolio. On Trade you pick every ticker, you run the Shariah screen (Zoya, Musaffa, or manual), and you live with cash, FX and USD-account fees as they currently stand on Wealthsimple's Trade fee schedule. The managed Halal Portfolio is a separate robo product with its own screening and fees. Review that here: Wealthsimple Halal Portfolio review. This guide is only the DIY Trade path.

If you want a board-supervised Canadian platform instead of DIY, compare Manzil and the other options in best halal investing platforms in Canada.

Opening a Trade TFSA or RRSP does not make the default holdings halal. If you buy a conventional Canadian bank, you own a conventional Canadian bank. The app will not stop you.

Fees to Confirm on Wealthsimple

As of the Trade fee schedule Wealthsimple publishes, listed US and Canadian securities show $0 commission, account opening and closing show $0, and EFT deposits and withdrawals show $0. Those figures can change. Re-read the live schedule before you treat them as permanent.

The cost that actually matters for DIY halal investors who buy US-listed names (for example a US Shariah ETF) from a CAD account is the 1.5% currency conversion fee Wealthsimple applies to the corporate exchange rate on filled US trades. A USD account avoids per-trade FX on US-listed securities once you are funded in USD. Wealthsimple's schedule lists a USD account fee of $10 plus applicable tax per month, with conversion between CAD and USD cash then charged on a tiered schedule (1.5% under $10,000 per conversion, stepping down at higher amounts, 0% at $100,000 and over). Premium and Generation tiers may include USD accounts; confirm current pricing on Wealthsimple's pricing page.

  • Prefer Canadian-listed screened ETFs when you want to avoid repeated FX
  • If you buy US tickers often, compare the 1.5% round-trip cost against a USD account
  • Instant withdrawals list a separate percentage fee on the schedule; ordinary EFT is the cheaper path
  • Margin interest is riba. DIY halal on Trade means cash purchases, not borrowing to buy stock

Cash Interest

Uninvested cash at a Canadian broker often earns interest. Interest on cash is riba. Confirm in the app whether your Trade cash balance currently pays interest and whether you can hold a non-interest arrangement. If interest is credited, do not spend it as a benefit; give it away and keep the cash balance small by staying invested in screened securities or by using a genuinely non-interest parking option you have verified.

Wealthsimple also offers Cash and chequing products that are built around interest. Those are not the Trade screening workflow. Do not mix a high-interest cash product into a DIY halal plan without a separate scholarly look at that product.

Which Tickers, and How to Screen

There is no official Wealthsimple Trade 'halal universe.' You build one.

  • Canadian-listed Shariah ETF: WSHR (Wealthsimple Shariah World Equity Index ETF) is the usual one-ticker starting point on the TSX. Confirm current holdings, methodology and purification notes with the issuer before you buy. A ticker that passed last year can drift.
  • Individual stocks: Run each symbol through Zoya or Musaffa, then read why it passed. Recheck after earnings. Conventional banks and insurers fail the business screen; do not buy them because they are 'Canadian blue chips.'
  • US-listed Shariah ETFs: Available on Trade but pull FX if you trade from CAD. Confirm the fund's screen and whether you can actually hold it in your registered account type.
  • What to skip: Options and futures as a default DIY tool, margin, and any product you cannot explain as a share of a real business or a screened fund.

For the screening method itself, use halal stocks in Canada. Apps disagree at the margin. If two screeners split, follow a scholar or stay out of the name.

Is Wealthsimple Trade itself halal?

The brokerage is a tool. Compliance depends on what you buy, whether cash earns interest, and whether you use margin. Trade will happily hold a bank stock. That is the point of this article.

Is this the same as the Wealthsimple Halal Portfolio?

No. The Halal Portfolio is a managed investing product. Trade is self-directed. You can hold a screened ETF on Trade without ever opening the Halal Portfolio, and you can hold the Halal Portfolio without using Trade stock picking.

Do I still pay 1.5% FX on US stocks?

From a CAD Trade account, Wealthsimple's published schedule applies a 1.5% currency conversion fee on filled US-listed trades. A USD account changes that mechanic. Confirm the live schedule; do not rely on a screenshot from 2024.

Is WSHR automatically enough?

It is a reasonable DIY core for many Canadians if you accept that ETF's screen and fees, and if you still purify if the issuer says you must. It is not a fatwa. Read the current fact sheet.

Can I use Zoya or Musaffa with Trade?

Yes. They are screeners, not brokers. You look up the ticker, then place the order on Trade. Recheck after each earnings season. For a comparison of the apps, see related HalalWallet screening coverage.

Should beginners use Trade or a managed halal platform?

If you will not screen, do not use Trade as a halal solution. Use a managed Islamic portfolio (Manzil, the Wealthsimple Halal sleeve, or another board-supervised option) until you are willing to do the work.

Bottom Line

DIY halal on Wealthsimple Trade works if you treat screening as the product, keep idle cash from becoming an interest income stream, and confirm commissions, FX and USD-account fees on the live Wealthsimple schedule. It fails if you confuse Trade with the Halal Portfolio and buy whatever is trending on the app.
